How to add height to a bed

I. Low-Cost, Simple Bed Leg Height Increase Methods

1. Bed Leg Raising Pads

Silicone/rubber raising pads are directly slipped onto the existing bed legs. Available in 5/8/10/15cm sizes, suitable for both square and round bed legs. Advantages: Installation takes 1 minute, non-slip and quiet, won’t damage the floor, suitable for wrought iron and solid wood beds. Note: All four pads must be the same height, otherwise the bed will wobble and tilt.

2. Square Solid Wood Blocks/Cement Blocks

Place solid wood blocks or anti-corrosion wood blocks under the bed legs. This is ideal for increasing height by 10-20cm, offering excellent load-bearing capacity, suitable for heavy-duty solid wood beds. Method: Level the wood blocks and apply felt to the contact surfaces to prevent slipping and scratching the floor. Disadvantages: Aesthetically less appealing; suitable for creating storage space under the bed.

3. Bed Base Boxes/Storage Boxes

Place rigid plastic storage boxes or solid wood drawers at the four corners of the bed, placing the bed frame directly on top of the boxes. This method raises the bed frame and increases storage space by 15-30cm. Key point: The storage box must be solid and sturdy; soft plastic folding boxes cannot be used as they will collapse under stress.

II. Medium Height Increase

1. Replacing Bed Legs with Extended Legs: Purchase extended solid wood bed legs or metal bed feet online, remove the original short legs, and screw them on directly. This can raise the bed by 10-30cm, resulting in a smooth and aesthetically pleasing finish with a level bed surface – the most visually appealing method. Measurement points: Accurately measure the distance and thickness of the screw holes on the existing bed legs before purchasing.

2. Metal Bed Frame Raising Brackets: Independent steel support legs that fit into the bed frame crossbeams. Support can be added not only at the four corners but also in the middle of the bed sides, raising the bed by 15-40cm. Suitable for beds with a softer frame or a sloping center. Suitable for tatami beds and slatted bed frames.

III. Significantly Increased Height

Custom-made loft bed frame: A carpenter builds a solid wood frame, raising the entire bed frame. A desk or wardrobe can be installed underneath. The overall height is increased by 40-80cm, a modification option.

Wrought iron loft bed base: A pre-made steel bed frame replaces the original bed frame. It has strong load-bearing capacity, and the height can be selected.

Important Safety Reminders: The higher the height, the higher the center of gravity. Anti-slip pads must be added to the four corners of the bed to prevent sliding and tipping. If the height exceeds 25cm, it is recommended to add extra support points to the sides of the bed, rather than relying solely on the four corners for support.

Excessive height increases are not recommended for slatted bed frames or storage bed frames, as they are prone to deformation and cracking.

Children’s beds should not be arbitrarily heightened to prevent the risk of falls.

Quick Selection Suggestions: If you only want to increase the height by 5-12cm: buy silicone bed leg risers; if you want to increase the height by 15-25cm: replacing the bed legs with longer ones is the best option; if you want under-bed storage: use hard storage boxes to raise the bed; if your solid wood bed has high load-bearing requirements: use solid wood blocks to raise the bed.

Several Practical Methods for Raising the Bed

Note: Raising the bed increases the center of gravity, so ensure it is level and stable to prevent wobbling and slipping.

1: Bed Leg Raising Pads

Place directly under each bed leg. Available in plastic, solid wood, and rubber.

Advantages: Immediate installation, no bed disassembly required, inexpensive.

Key Points:

All four legs must be the same height;

The bottom must have anti-slip features to prevent the bed from shifting;

The bed legs must be completely seated in the center of the pad, not suspended in the air.

Suitable for: Solid wood beds, wrought iron beds.

2: Replacing with Extended Bed Legs

Remove the original short bed legs and replace them with longer, threaded bed legs of the same type.

The bed surface is flatter, looks better, and doesn’t take up space underneath.

Measure the thread specifications and hole diameter of the old bed legs before buying.

Suitable for: Slatted bed frames, beds with adjustable legs. 3. Solid Wood Board/Slab Under the Bed Frame (Strong Load-Bearing Capacity): Place a thick wooden board or slab under the entire bed frame, not just the legs. Suitable for solid wood beds, raising the frame by 10-20cm.

Simply placing boards at the four corners, leaving the center unsupported, can cause the bed frame to bend and break.

3.Rigid Storage Boxes for Elevation

Place hard plastic/solid wood storage boxes under the four corners of the bed, with the entire bed frame resting on the boxes. Never use soft, folding storage boxes, as they will collapse. It’s best to add 1-2 additional boxes in the center for support to prevent the frame from warping.

4. Installation of a Suspension Frame

 Use a pre-made steel base support. Place the entire bed on the frame, providing support at the four corners and the center. Suitable for slatted bed frames. Due to the higher center of gravity, avoid frequent bed movement.

Not recommended practices:

Just using a mattress (with extra padding): This only thickens the mattress; the bed frame height remains the same. Sitting on the edge of the bed will cause you to sink in, making it unstable.

Using bricks directly as a mattress pad: This is prone to breakage, slipping, and scratching the floor; it’s unsafe. If you must use bricks, you must cover them with wooden boards for security.

Safety points: If the height is greater than 20cm, you must add a central support point; do not rely solely on the four corners for weight support. If there is significant wobbling after raising the bed, it indicates insufficient support, and you need to add more support points. For the elderly and children, it is not recommended to raise the bed more than 25cm to prevent falls.

How to Raise a Bed Without Legs

This type of bed has a flat/box-like base. You can’t just prop up the four corners! Propping only the corners will cause the bed to crack or warp. The entire base must bear the weight.

Method 1: Support with a large board + wooden strips

Suitable for: Panel beds, flat-base beds. Materials: Multi-layer solid wood boards/OSB boards + wooden strips, felt anti-slip tape.

Move the bed out.

Cut the wooden strips to a uniform height and arrange them horizontally around the edges and center of the bed base, spacing them 30-40cm apart. Don’t just place them at the four corners.

Lay a large board on top of the wooden strips.

Place the entire bed frame on the large board.

Apply felt to the bottom of the board to prevent scratching the floor and slipping.

Principle: Distributes the force across the entire bed base, preventing localized pressure and cracking.

Method 2: Custom-made Integrated Raise Base Steel Frame

Buy a raise base steel frame the full size of the bed online (not a single bed leg!). It’s not four small supports, but a rectangular, integrated frame.

Level the steel frame on the ground;

Place the entire bed frame directly onto the steel frame.

Advantages: Stable, allows for easy cleaning under the bed; Make sure to choose a steel frame that is close to the length and width of the bed, not smaller.

Method 3: Multiple Hard Boxes Fill the Bottom

Never place them only in the four corners!

Use thickened hard plastic/solid wood boxes, evenly filling the space under the bed, leaving no large gaps;

Tightly close and lock the box lids to prevent deformation;

The entire bed base should be placed on top of the boxes;

The boxes should be as close together as possible, without any gaps in between.

Disadvantages: The boxes may slightly deform over time when the bed is heavy; not suitable for extra-large, heavy-duty bed frames.

Method 4: Raising the Mattress Internally

The bed itself is of acceptable height, but the mattress is low when sitting or lying down.

Lay a solid, 5-8cm thick board (coconut fiber board/wooden board) on top of the bed frame and under the mattress; then place the mattress on top.

Note: The mattress will protrude above the edge of the bed frame, raising the seating area.

What is the optimal bed height?

The generally recommended comfortable height is 45-55cm, which is the most suitable height for most adults.

Determining the Golden Standard (more accurate than numbers):

Sit on the edge of the bed with both feet flat on the ground, knees at approximately 90°.

When sitting, your thighs should be roughly horizontal, with your feet on the ground without tiptoeing or dangling, and your thighs should not sag.

Recommended Height by Group:

Normal Adults (155-175cm): 45-52cm

Taller Individuals (>178cm): 50-55cm (A slightly higher bed reduces the need to bend over excessively when sitting)

Elderly Individuals or Those with Mobility Issues: 42-48cm (Don’t go too low! A lower height makes standing up difficult. Avoid heights below 40cm and above 52cm to prevent difficulty getting into bed and the risk of falling)

Teenagers: 45-50cm

Children: 40-45cm (Too high increases the risk of falling)

Note: This height refers to the distance from the top of the mattress to the ground, not the bottom of the bed frame! Many people mistakenly consider the height of the bed frame to be the distance from the ground. For example, a bed frame 20cm off the ground plus a 22cm thick mattress results in an actual bed height of 42cm.

Common Situation Comparison

Old-fashioned low-profile bed: Total height 35-40cm → Too low, difficult to get up, this is the type of bed you want to raise.

Standard prefabricated slatted bed: 45-50cm → Most comfortable

High bed: >60cm → Too high, suitable for under-bed storage, not recommended for the elderly.

Considering your previous request to raise a bed without legs:

If most people in your household are adults, a target height of 46-50cm (top of the mattress off the ground) will be very comfortable.

If there are elderly people in the household, do not exceed 48cm.
